하나님의 이야기
절대 잊을 수 없는 순간이었다. 익숙한 성경 구절을 읽고 있었는데, 눈 깜짝할 사이에 그 의미가 완전히 뒤집혔다.
“기록된 바 하나님이 자기를 사랑하는 자들을 위하여 예비하신 모든 것은 눈으로 보지 못하고 귀로 듣지 못하고 사람의 마음으로 생각하지도 못하였다 함과 같으니라”(고전 2:9)
이 구절은 언제나 위대한 약속처럼 여겨졌다. 하나님께서 이루실, 인간의 상상조차 미치지 못하는 경이로움. 보지 못한 놀라운 광경, 들어보지 못한 새로운 음악과 말씀, 현실을 초월한 천국의 약속이 여기에 담겨 있다고 생각했다. 얼마 전 도시 광장에서 받은 영적 소책자도 같은 메시지를 전하고 있었다. 예수님이 제시하신 이 놀라운 미래를 왜 놓치려 하느냐는 물음이었다. 어떤 이들은 이것이 종교가 인간의 불가능한 소망을 충족시키려는 환상에 불과하다고 말할지도 모른다.
그런데 그 구절을 다시 찬찬히 읽는 순간, 충격이 찾아왔다. 이 놀라운 현실이 이미 일어났다고 말하고 있었기 때문이다. “하나님께서 이미 우리에게 계시하셨으니, 곧 성령을 통해 우리에게 밝히 드러내신 것입니다.” 그렇다면 언제, 어디서 눈으로 보지 못한 것을 보고, 귀로 듣지 못한 것을 들었다는 말인가?
바울은 말한다. 우리가 전하는 것은 하나님의 지혜, 곧 은밀하고 감추어진 것으로, 하나님께서 우리의 영광을 위해 영원 전에 정하신 것이다. 이 시대의 통치자들은 그것을 깨닫지 못했다. 만약 그들이 알았더라면 영광의 주를 십자가에 못 박지 않았을 것이다.
그렇다. 아무도 보지 못했던 것이 바로 거기에 있었다. 하나님의 아들, 마구간에서 태어난 아기. 아무도 듣지 못했던 것이 그의 삶 속에서 날마다 선포되었다. 하나님의 나라와 그 실체가 그의 말과 행동을 통해 드러났다.
살아 계신 하나님께서 인간의 역사 속으로 들어오셨다는 사실을 누가 상상이나 했을까. 예수의 삶과 죽음, 부활과 승천을 통해 하나님은 인간의 시간과 공간 안에 자신을 드러내셨다. 성령은 임마누엘, 곧 하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다는 진리를 증언한다. 인간의 마음으로는 도저히 상상할 수 없었던 놀라운 반전이다. 미래의 소망이 사라진 것은 아니다. 오히려 예수 그리스도 안에서 하나님의 더 깊고 넓은 목적 위에 그 소망이 뿌리내리고 있다.
이것이 바로 예수의 메시지다. 하나님은 인간의 이야기 속에 함께 계신다. 하나님은 새로운 방식으로 역사 가운데 임하시며, 모든 삶과 소통하신다. 예수의 삶은 그 시대의 삶과 얽혀 있었고, 그는 하나님이 모든 시대의 인간 이야기 속에 함께 계심을 끊임없이 가르쳤다. 역사는 하나님의 이야기이자, 동시에 우리의 이야기다.
이제 우리는 인간 제국의 폭력과 살육을 넘어, 인간 사랑의 영광을 넘어, 새로운 미래를 바라볼 수 있다. 믿음은 소망을 품는다. 우리의 날들이 아무리 길고, 수천 년이 흘렀다 해도, 하나님은 말씀하신다. “내가 결코 너희를 버리지 아니하고 너희를 떠나지 아니하리라”(히 13:5). 주님은 인내하시며, 그분의 임재가 발견되고, 인정받고, 성취되기를 기다리신다. “주께는 하루가 천 년 같고, 천 년이 하루 같으니라”(벧후 3:8). 우리의 날들과 역사는 이제 하나님의 임재를 경험하는 특별한 방식으로 포착되었다.
이것이야말로 참으로 귀한 보물이다.

God’s Story.
It was a moment never to be forgotten. I was reading the following well-known Bible passage when it was, in the blink an eye, turned on its head.
But as it is written,” What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor 2:9)
It had always been a great promise. The wonder of what God would bring into being that could not even be comprehended. What an inspiring hope -extraordinary views to be seen, new music and words to be heard beyond anything dreamed of, beyond any reality as yet comprehended or envisaged. Here it seems is the promise of what heaven would be like. I was recently handed a spiritual tract in a city square. It pointedly asked, why miss out on this astounding future that Jesus was offering. A cynic might claim this is just another illustration that religion offers nothing but impossible human wish fulfillment
It was while carefully reading the passage the shock came. It stated this reality had already happened. “these things God has already revealed to us -disclosed to- us through the Spirit”!!! When and where did eyes see the unseen, ears hear the unheard?
But we speak of God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.
It is there, what no eye had seen, the Son of God, a baby born in a stable. And what no ear had heard, the announcing of the kingdom and reality of God demonstrated day after day in his life.
Who could have comprehended or envisaged that the living God was let loose in human history through his life, death on a cross, resurrection and ascension. Truly the Spirit of God shows Emmanuel God is with us, is here. No human heart had dreamt of this surprise. In one sense the future hope is not denied, but in Jesus Christ grounded in these deeper and wider purposes of God.
It is the message of Jesus. God is caught up in the human story! God is at hand in a new way, interacting with all life in the midst of history. Jesus’ life was enmeshed in the life of his time. He kept pointing out that it is God who is enmeshed in the human story of all time. History becomes God’s story as well as our own. Now there is a future beyond the violence and killing of human empires, beyond the glory of human love, faith has a hope. Despite our days, despite the thousands of years, and more. “I will never leave you or forsake you” says God (Heb 13:5). The Lord in patience waits for his presence to be discovered, acknowledged and fulfilled. “With the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like one day.” (2 Peter 3:8b) Our days and our history are now caught up into the extra-ordinay way God is found within our experience and within the horizon of our history.
What a treasure.
