REAL DMZ PROJECT
International artists respond to Korea’s Demilitarised Zone
ARTSPACE AND NATIONAL ART SCHOOL SPECIAL SCREENING
In conjunction with the touring exhibition Negotiating Borders, Sydney at the Korean Cultural Centre Australia (28 January – 29 March 2022), Artspace is hosting a screening program at the National Art School (NAS) on Thursday 24 March as part of the weekly after-hours program NAS NEO, as well as an Art Forum lunchtime lecture with featured artist Adrián Villar Rojas on Wednesday 23 March.

Negotiating Borders, Sydney has emerged from the REAL DMZ PROJECT, conceived in 2011 to explore the (in)visible borders of the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula dividing North and South Korea. Through collaborations with artists as well as other experts in different fields including history, sociology, architecture and ecology, the REAL DMZ PROJECT has conducted research and produced artworks, exhibitions, publications and more examining concepts around geographical borders, as well as invisible borders such as ideological and psychological divides that operate in society, culture and everyday life.
Negotiating Borders, Sydney examines the meaning of borders during these pandemic times, as we have dealt with international border closures, regional blockades and travel restrictions within Australia. The exhibition reflects on this unprecedented time to suggest the possibility of a new, more open future between North and South Korea. Screening at NAS will be major video works by Korean and international artists responding to the DMZ, capturing the sensibilities and anxieties that arise from being positioned in-between.
Artspace Executive Director Alexie Glass-Kantor said, “With current global events, it’s critical to learn from artists and expand our understanding of borders, regions and sites of conflict. Artspace is thrilled to present this important screening program, in partnership with NAS, REAL DMZ PROJECT and the Korean Cultural Centre. We look forward to bringing these artists together in a new context.”
NAS Director and CEO Steven Alderton said, “We are delighted to be involved with this special project, which crosses international boundaries to present thought-provoking and enlightening works, and a message of hope that divisions can be overcome in the future.”
Artspace also presents an Art Forum lunchtime lecture on Wednesday 23 March at NAS with participating artist Adrián Villar Rojas, who spent a month in Yangji-ri, a small village in the DMZ buffer zone between North and South Korea. One of his responses to living with the villagers is his film El momento más hermoso de la guerra (The Most Beautiful Moment of War), 2017, screening as part of Negotiating Borders, Sydney.
