국립전자대학에서 명예철학박사, 신성형이상학 대학에서 철학·심리학 박사, 인도 두플렉스 국제대학에서 의학박사 등의 학위를 받았다.
국립 에나멜링 앤드 스탬핑 회사에서 15년 동안 사환으로 일했다.
1885년엔 출판업에 뛰어들어 C. F. 하넬 출판사를 설립했다. 그 후 파트너를 모아 세계에서 가장 큰 회사 중 하나인 컨티넨탈 커머셜 컴퍼니를 세웠다.
당시 그 회사의 자본금은 자그마치 2백 50만 달러였다. 이 회사는 승승장구했고, 이러한 성공을 바탕으로 채굴 회사 등을 설립해 부를 더욱 키웠다.
해낼은 사업 외에도 미국저자연맹, 미국심령연구회, 세인트루이스 동물애호회, 세인트루이스 상공회의소, 미국과학연맹의 일원으로 활동했다.
하넬은 철학, 심리학, 인과법칙, 삶과 인간성에 관한 과학, 마음에 관한 과학 등에 관한 글을 썼다.
특히 하넬은 이 모든 분야를 하나의 철학체계로 정립하여 우리의 일상생활에 바로 적용할 수 있도록 하였다.
자신의 저서인 ‘마스터 키 시스템’을 통해 신사고 운동에 기여한 상태를 가지고 있다.
월터 스티븐스가 쓴 ⟪세인트루이스-네 번째 도시⟫라는 전기에 의하면, 해낼은 “성숙한 판단력을 가진 사람으로, 인생을 차분히 관조하고 내면의 생각이 주는 무한한 기회와 가능성의 가치를 알았다.”고 한다.
