에드나 오브라이언 (Josephine Edna O’Brien)은 1930년 12월 15일 아일랜드 클레어 주 투암그레이니에서 태어났다.
엄격한 가톨릭 가정에서 성장했으며, 유년기에는 수녀원에서 운영하는 기숙학교에 다녔다.
약사 자격증을 취득한 후, 낮에는 약국에서 일하고 밤에는 약대를 다녔다.
체코계 아일랜드 작가 어니스트 게블러와 결혼했지만 곧 이혼했다.
1960년 첫 소설 ‘시골 소녀들 (The Country Girls)’을 발표하며 작가로 데뷔했다. 이 소설은 아일랜드에서 금서로 지정되었지만, 해외에서는 큰 호평을 받았다.
이후 런던에서 거주하며 20편 이상의 소설, 전기, 드라마 대본 등 다양한 작품을 썼다.
