부친은 키프로스계 그리스인, 모친은 중국계 싱가포르인이다.

케임브리지 대학교와 유니버시티 칼리지 런던에서 학업했다.

구글 딥마인드의 창업자이자 최고 경영자인 데미스 허사비스는 13살의 나이에 체스마스터가 됐고, 17살에 게임 개발에 참여하기 시작했다.

어린 나이부터 프로그래밍을 배운 그는, 블랙 & 화이트라는 게임의 인공지능을 개발하는 데 참여했다.

엘리시르 스튜디오라는 비디오 게임 개발사를 만들어, ‘리퍼블릭: 혁명 (Republic: The Revolution)’과 ‘이블 지니어스 (Evil Genius)’라는 게임도 제작했다.

허사비스는 화학을 전공하지 않았으며 응용분야를 연구해왔기에 상당히 파격적인 수상이라고 볼 수 있다. 며칠 전 볼츠만 머신을 비롯하여 인공신경망 분야 기여에 대한 공로로 응용분야를 연구해온 제프리 힌튼도 노벨물리학상을 수상한 바 있다. 허사비스 팀의 알파폴드도 결국 힌튼의 볼츠만 머신 기반 인공신경망 방법론을 활용한 모델이기 때문에 허사비스까지 화학상을 수상하며 노벨위원회는 인공지능이 인류사회에 미친 단기적 파장을 매우 높게 평가했다고 볼 수 있다.
