The Unseen God
A vital element of faith is that God is unseen. In the Book of Hebrews faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. We read:
By faith we understand that that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. (Heb 11:3)
What does it mean that God is unseen? Where is God if God cannot be seen? There are a limited number of possibilities. Firstly, God is unseen because God is far away, as in Barbare Streisand’s song- “God is watching us from a distance”. Secondly, God is present in words of instruction or morality and one day will be present o bring a final judgement upon the creation. Thirdly, as is often said in today’s understanding, God is not seen because there is no God to see!
Finally there is another intriguing possibility. If God was able to be seen, God would become an object within the creation. God is unseen because God wants to be present to the whole creation. The One who is the source of all knows the whole creation and the ‘eye’ of God can see the whole creation. We are limited because we can only see objects in the creation. Our eyes were created to see people, trees and roads and a world. Our life is limited to about 100 years, we who live in the narrow ribbon of atmosphere of one planet, whose health depends on what grows here, and whose safety depends on how careful we are in a risky world. We cannot see the Creator whereas the unseen Creator can see us.
In fact, the witness of generations is that the unseen God is present in our midst in ways beyond our knowing. God is closer than thinking and nearer than breathing. In Athens in about 50 AD Paul said,
For in him we live and move and have our being. (Acts 17:28).
The Psalmist knew this too:
Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high I cannot attain it.” (Psalm 139:4-6)
Then comes the marvellous mystery of the incarnation. God discloses a person in the midst of time and space, who shows us the very character of this unseen one. He speaks of the kingdom of God opened, and the way the Holy Spirit is God’s action in our midst. God breaks open the cosmic web of God’s unseen presence in our midst.
What a possibility! The unseen God is in fact present to be discovered. What an apocalyptic moment it is when that happens. To see life with the unseen God. To live in God’s presence!
보이지 않는 하나님
믿음의 핵심 요소 중 하나는 하나님이 보이지 않으신다는 사실입니다. 히브리서에서 믿음은 바라는 것들의 확신이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거라고 합니다. 다음과 같이 기록되어 있습니다.
“믿음으로 우리는 세상이 하나님의 말씀으로 창조되었음을 깨닫나니 보이는 것은 보이지 않는 것들로 지음 받았느니라.” (히브리서 11:3)
하나님이 보이지 않으신다는 것은 무엇을 의미할까요? 하나님이 보이지 않으신다면 어디에 계실까요? 몇 가지 가능성이 있습니다. 첫째, 바바라 스트라이샌드의 노래 “God is watching us from distance”처럼 하나님이 멀리 계시기 때문에 보이지 않으시는 것입니다. 둘째, 하나님은 말씀이나 도덕적 가르침을 통해 우리와 함께 계시며, 언젠가 창조 세계에 대한 최종 심판을 내리시기 위해 다시 나타나실 것입니다. 셋째, 오늘날 흔히 말하는 것처럼, 볼 수 있는 하나님이 없기 때문에 보이지 않으시는 것입니다!
마지막으로 흥미로운 가능성이 하나 더 있습니다. 만약 하나님이 눈에 보이는 존재라면, 하나님은 창조 세계 안의 사물이 되실 것입니다. 하나님이 보이지 않으시는 이유는 온 창조 세계와 함께하시기를 원하시기 때문입니다. 만물의 근원이신 그분은 온 창조 세계를 아시며, 하나님의 ‘눈’은 온 창조 세계를 볼 수 있습니다. 우리는 창조 세계의 사물만을 볼 수 있기에 한계가 있습니다. 우리의 눈은 사람, 나무, 길, 그리고 세상을 보도록 창조되었습니다. 우리의 수명은 약 100년으로 제한되어 있으며, 우리는 좁은 대기권 안에 갇혀 이 행성에서 자라는 것들에 우리의 건강이 달려 있고, 위험한 세상에서 우리의 안전은 우리가 얼마나 조심하느냐에 달려 있습니다. 우리는 창조주를 볼 수 없지만, 보이지 않으시는 창조주는 우리를 보고 계십니다.
실제로 여러 세대에 걸친 증언은 보이지 않으시는 하나님이 우리가 알 수 없는 방식으로 우리 가운데 함께하신다는 것을 보여줍니다. 하나님은 생각보다, 숨 쉬는 것보다 더 가까이 계십니다. 서기 50년경 아테네에서 사도 바울은 이렇게 말했습니다.
“우리는 그리스도 안에서 살고 움직이며 존재합니다.” (사도행전 17:28)
시편 기자도 이 사실을 알고 있었습니다.
“여호와여, 내가 말하기도 전에 주께서는 내 모든 것을 아시나이다. 주께서는 나를 앞뒤로 에워싸시고 손을 얹으시나이다. 이러한 주님의 섭리는 내게 너무나 놀라워 내가 감히 이룰 수 없나이다.” (시편 139:4-6)
그리고 놀라운 성육신의 신비가 드러납니다. 하나님께서는 시간과 공간 가운데 한 인격을 나타내시어, 보이지 않는 분의 본성을 우리에게 보여주십니다. 그분은 열린 하나님의 나라와 성령께서 우리 가운데 역사하시는 방식을 말씀하십니다. 하나님께서는 우리 가운데 계시는 보이지 않는 하나님의 임재를 감추고 있던 우주적인 그물망을 열어 보이십니다.
얼마나 놀라운 일입니까! 보이지 않는 하나님께서 실제로 우리 가운데 계시며, 우리가 그분을 발견할 수 있도록 하신다는 사실입니다. 보이지 않는 하나님과 함께하는 삶을 보는 것, 하나님의 임재 안에서 사는 것은 얼마나 놀라운 일입니까!
