REMEMBERING ‘AUSTRALIANS IN THE KOREAN WAR’
25 June

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean War which erupted on the 25th of June 1950.
From 1950-1953, over 17,000 Australians in the Army, Navy and Air Force fought as part of the United Nations (UN) multinational force served during the Korean War defending South Korea from the Communist forces of North Korea, of which 340 were killed and over 1,216 wounded. As of December 2019, there are approximately 2,500 Australian Korean War veterans still alive in Australian of whom the average age is 89.5.
This anniversary is of great significance to the Korean people but, most importantly, we would like to remember and recognise those veterans and their families who sacrificed so much 70 years ago.
The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Sydney and the Korean Cultural Centre AU in collaboration with the ANZAC Memorial are bringing various programs in June in order to commemorate #KoreanWar70Years which will include a Sydney light rail campaign, a digital exhibition, a film screening and a special talk featuring some of the honorable faces of Korean War veterans in Australia.
We look forward to announcing the program in more detail in early June. Stay tuned for further updates on www.koreanculture.org.au as well as on our social media.
