60년 최고의 폭우와 광범위한 홍수와 침수로 광역 시드니와 뉴사우스웨일스(NSW)주에 큰 피해가 발생하고 있다. 호주 당국은 수천 명의 주민에 대해 대피령을 내렸다.
3월 22일(현지시간) 현재도 60년래 기록적인 포우가 지속되면서 호주 재난당국은 인구가 밀접해 있는 시드니와 NSW지역에 긴급 대피령을 발동했다.
홈부시 · 팬리스 · 메릭빌 등 시드니 광역권에 강우량은 111mm가 넘었고, 시드니에서 남서쪽으로 80km 떨어진 픽톤에서는 강우량이 160mm를 기록했다. 또 NSW의 북부해안 일부의 강우량은 900mm를 넘어섰다.
이번 폭우로 NSW주 중북부 해안, 헌터 밸리, 리치먼드, 혹스베리 등에 홍수와 침수 피해가 속출했다.
시드니의 주 식수원인 와라감바댐이 2016년 이후 처음으로 범람했고 타리 북쪽의 포트 매쿼리에서는 해이스팅스 강이 범람해 강변에 있는 한 유명 식당이 완전히 물에 잠기는 피해를 입었다.
NSW주 응급서비스(SES)는 지난 3월 18일부터 악천후로 인해 도움 요청 전화가 6,700건, 홍수 구조요청이 670건이 쇄도했다고 밝혔다.
글래디스 베레지클리언 NSW주 총리는 “안타깝게도 중북부 해안의 홍수는 100년에 한 번 있을 재난”이라면서 “주민들은 대피령이 내리면 곧장 행동할 수 있기를 바란다”고 당부했다.
