2026년 7월 30일, 외교관, 기업인, 정부 관계자, 상공회의소 임원 및 지역 사회 지도자들이 시드니 코클 베이 워프의 라쿠아 루프탑 테라스에 모여 ‘Connect & Cheers 3: 비즈니스와 외교의 밤’ 행사를 가졌다.
Australian Business Summit Council Inc. (이하 ABSC Inc.)가 주최한 이 행사는 다양한 국가, 산업 및 기관의 대표자들이 만나 아이디어를 교환하고 의미 있는 전문적 관계를 구축할 수 있는 우아하면서도 편안한 분위기를 제공하기 위해 마련된 Connect & Cheers 시리즈의 세 번째 행사였다.
ABSC Inc. 회장인 프랭크 알라파치 박사는 120명의 VIP 및 기타 참석자들에게 이 시리즈의 지속적인 성공은 전통적인 컨퍼런스, 공식 회의 및 공식 프로그램 외에서 비즈니스와 외교가 만날 수 있는 기회의 필요성을 보여준다고 말했다. 비공식적인 대화는 종종 중요한 비즈니스 관계, 국제 파트너십, 무역 기회 및 지속적인 우정의 시작이 될 수 있다.
Connect and Cheers 3에는 크로아티아, 이탈리아, 이집트, 터키, 몰타, 루마니아, 아르헨티나, 파라과이, 우루과이, 필리핀, 방글라데시, 나미비아, 일본, 미국, 중국, 인도네시아, 이라크, 헝가리, 말레이시아, 그리스, 라트비아, 에스토니아, 슬로베니아, 엘살바도르, 슬로바키아 공화국의 총영사 및 기타 영사관 대표를 비롯한 저명한 외교 사절단이 참석했다.
또한 NSW 경찰청의 브래들리 존스턴 경감, LK 그룹의 래리 케스텔만 회장, 호주 동북 중국 상공회의소의 존 장과 데이비드 장, 시드니 한인회 주벡형 회장, 호주 가나 상공회의소의 리처드 보아텡 회장, NSW 소말리아 협의회의 우바 가브리스 회장, 리버풀 상공회의소의 마이클 아지 회장 등 기업, 정부 및 지역 사회의 주요 인사들도 참석했다. 캐나다 베이 시의회 의원인 마스 메우로스와 캐나다 베이 시의회 의원이자 호주 비즈니스 서밋 위원회(Australian Business Summit Council Inc.) 사무총장인 실비아 알라파치 박사가 참석했다.
알라파치 박사는 참석자들의 다양성이 건설적인 국제 교류의 중요성 증대와 국가, 산업, 지역 사회를 넘나드는 사람들을 연결하는 데 있어 호주 비즈니스 서밋 위원회의 역할이 점점 더 커지고 있음을 반영한다고 언급했다.
이날 저녁의 핵심 메시지는 성공적인 네트워킹은 명함 교환이나 소셜 미디어에서 새로운 연락처를 추가하는 것 이상이어야 한다는 것이었다. 진정한 전문적 관계는 호기심, 경청, 신뢰, 관대함, 그리고 사람과 조직이 함께 무엇을 성취할 수 있는지 탐구하려는 의지를 필요로 한다.
다양한 참가자들은 수많은 협력 가능성을 창출했다. 외교 대표는 다른 국가의 경제 발전에 기여할 수 있는 호주 기업을 만날 수 있고, 기업 리더는 새로운 수출 시장이나 투자 기회를 발견할 수 있으며, 상공회의소는 다른 조직과의 잠재적 파트너십을 모색할 수 있고, 정부 대표는 기업이 직면한 기회와 과제를 더 잘 이해할 수 있었다.
알라파치 박사는 복잡한 경제, 사회, 국제적 과제는 정부, 기업 또는 시민 사회가 단독으로 해결할 수 없다고 강조했다. 발전을 위해서는 협력, 지식 공유, 신뢰, 그리고 공동의 목표가 필요하다. 공식 회의는 여전히 중요하지만, 비공식 외교는 참가자들이 더욱 개방적으로 소통하고 공식적인 자리에서는 드러나지 않을 수 있는 기회를 발견할 수 있도록 해준다.

Hosted by the Australian Business Summit Council Inc., the event marked the third instalment of the organisation’s growing Connect & Cheers series that was created to provide an elegant yet relaxed environment where representatives from different countries, industries and institutions could meet, exchange ideas and establish meaningful professional relationships.

Addressing 120 VIPs and other guests, ABSC Inc. President Dr. Frank Alafaci PhD stated that the continuing success of the series demonstrated the need for opportunities where business and diplomacy could come together outside traditional conferences, official meetings and formal programs. Informal conversations could often become the beginning of significant business relationships, international partnerships, trade opportunities and enduring friendships.

Connect and Cheers 3 attracted an eminent diplomatic delegation, featuring consuls general and other consular representatives from Croatia, Italy, Egypt, Türkiye, Malta, Romania, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Namibia, Japan, the United States, China, Indonesia, Iraq, Hungary, Malaysia, Greece, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia, El Salvador and the Slovak Republic.

Senior business, government and community representatives also attended, including Chief Inspector Bradley Johnston of the NSW Police Force; Mr. Larry Kestelman, Executive Chairman of the LK Group; Mr. John Jiang and Mr. David Zhang of the Australian Dongbei Chinese Chamber of Commerce; Mr. Ju Bek Hyung of the Korean Society of Sydney; Mr. Richard Boateng of the Australian Ghanaian Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Ms. Ubah Gabris of the Somali Council of NSW; Mr. Michael Azzi of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce; City of Canada Bay Councillor Mas Meuross; and City of Canada Bay Councillor and Australian Business Summit Council Inc. Secretary Sylvia Alafaci.

Dr. Alafaci noted that the diversity of those present reflected the growing importance of constructive international engagement and the increasing role of the Australian Business Summit Council Inc. in connecting people across countries, industries and communities.

The central message of the evening was that successful networking must extend beyond exchanging business cards or adding new contacts on social media. Genuine professional relationships require curiosity, listening, trust, generosity and a willingness to explore what people and organisations can achieve together.

The range of participants created numerous possibilities for cooperation. A diplomatic representative could meet an Australian company capable of contributing to economic development in another country. A business leader could discover a new export market or investment opportunity. A chamber of commerce could identify a potential partnership with another organisation, while a government representative could gain a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing business.

Dr. Alafaci stressed that complex economic, social and international challenges could not be addressed by governments, businesses or civil society acting alone. Progress required cooperation, shared knowledge, trust and common purpose. Formal meetings remain essential, but informal diplomacy can allow participants to communicate more openly and discover opportunities that may not emerge in a formal setting.

The Australian Business Summit Council Inc. is a not-for-profit, multisector organisation dedicated to advancing international business, trade, investment, diplomacy and knowledge exchange. It brings together diplomats, policymakers, business leaders, investors, academics, chambers of commerce and community representatives through forums, conferences, networking events and publications.

The Council seeks to complement the work of diplomatic missions, government agencies, trade bodies and chambers of commerce by providing an independent and welcoming platform where relationships can develop across sectors and national borders.

The organisation believes that sustainable business relationships are built on mutual respect, cultural understanding and personal trust. Trade agreements, economic policies and investment frameworks are important, but people ultimately transform those frameworks into practical outcomes by recognising opportunities, making introductions and turning ideas into action.

The Council also publishes EKONOMOS, an international business affairs magazine featuring contributions from ambassadors, high commissioners, business executives, academics and thought leaders. It provides a platform for informed discussion about international trade, investment, economics, diplomacy, innovation and the changing global environment.

Through EKONOMOS and its events, the Council aims to share international perspectives with Australian audiences, while showcasing the achievements and capabilities of Australian businesses to diplomatic and international communities.

Australia’s cultural diversity was described as one of the nation’s greatest economic and diplomatic strengths. The languages, cultural knowledge, professional expertise and international relationships represented within Australian society provide the country with an exceptional capacity to engage with the world.

Connect & Cheers 3 also took place during a period of economic uncertainty, technological transformation, changing supply chains and evolving geopolitical conditions. In this environment, trusted relationships are increasingly valuable.

Trust, however, cannot be created overnight. It develops gradually through conversations, shared experiences, reliability and mutual respect. Some introductions made during the evening might lead to immediate opportunities, while others could develop into future partnerships.

Dr. Alafaci thanked the diplomatic representatives, business leaders, government officials, emergency services representatives, community leaders, Council members and supporters who contributed to the success of the event, especially Councillor Sylvia Alafaci, the Secretary of the Australian Business Summit Council Inc., whose dedication, energy and attention to detail were instrumental in organising the evening.

Looking ahead, the Council intends to continue developing Connect & Cheers as a trusted platform through which diplomacy, business and community leadership can come together.

As the ABSC Inc. President summed up: “Let us continue to build bridges between nations. Let us transform conversations into collaboration. Let us turn introductions into opportunities. And let us ensure that the connections made tonight become the partnerships of tomorrow.”
