If Christ Came to the Olympics
Now that we are in August the heat is rising in Seoul and the days are getting longer in Sydney. Being August this year means it must also be the Olympics. The Australian sports commentators are busy pushing ‘our’ achievements and showing how well we are doing on the medal table. Back in Korea there is more attention being given to President Park Geun-hye’s intention to deploy an advanced US anti-missile system despite strong Chinese opposition. Nevertheless, South Korea is celebrating success in Rio through the gold medal won by its women’s archery team.
For the past seven years Rio de Janeiro has been preparing to follow in the paths before them set by Seoul and Sydney. It is increasingly clear, of course, that it is a big task to host such a global sporting festival. It has its benefits, of course. The Olympics focus global attention on the hosting city and usually there is all manner of infrastructure development. Sometimes – maybe most often- there is then a large debt and considerable discussion as to how these new facilities can be best used. The same kind of questions come round every four years!
This year the interest and concern mediated through the media has been greater than usual. The threat of the Zika virus meant that some leading golfers elected not to go to Rio. Earlier on in the piece there was indeed a call for the games to be suspended until that threat had abated (even though, at this time of year, Rio’s “winter”, mosquitoes are less prevalent). Those problems were not the only ones needing some good public relations. Brazil is enmeshed in political turmoil; the past several years have not seen the economic growth and well-being which seemed likely when Rio first bid for the games. On the night the games opened the Olympic torch relay had to take a new route in order to go around some protesters who were wondering why all this money should be expended on the games and not on other basic services. The first few news items out of Rio also seemed to take delight in yet another account of a hold-up … and then there was, of course, the problem of sports’ doping and whether or not Russia would be allowed to compete.
Standing over Rio is a rather compelling statue of Christ the Redeemer on the top of Cordovaco mountain. It was constructed between 1922 and 1931 and is now regarded as one of the seven new wonders of the world. It is a statue in an Art Deco style designed by the Polish-French sculptor Paul Landowski. It stands 30 metres in height and the width of the embracing arms is 28 metres. It looks out over the city in a welcoming, comforting sort of way. It is as if Christ Redeemer is blessing the city down below.
The iconic status of the statue made me think of a series of lectures given by William J. Baker prior to the Sydney games. The title of those lectures (and the subsequent book) was If Christ Came to the Olympics. The content was a serious enquiry into the nature of sport, the lure of glory, and how faith itself has sometimes been expressed through sporting metaphors. The most obvious here would have do with running the race. Those lectures were reviewed at the time by a columnist in the Sydney Morning Herald who asked whether the first would now be last. If Christ did indeed come to the Olympics, then we might need to imagine a reversal in fortune and expectations!
Four Olympics on from Sydney (and seven from Seoul) I wondered if there needed to be one more lecture. Maybe the statue perched high up on Cordovaco can signify that Christ (in an iconic sort of way) has come to the Olympics after all! This is the first time that the Olympics have come to a developing country; it is the first time it has come to Latin America. The Olympics have come to a city which knows great riches but where many struggle and there is, seemingly, much violence. Christ is here …… and just maybe the place where Christ was present in the midst of all the athletes striving for victory was in the march passed. For the first time ever there was a ‘team’ representing refugees.

그리스도가 올림픽에 오셨다면
이제 8월에 들어서면서 서울은 더위가 기승을 부리며 시드니는 낮이 길어지고 있습니다. 올해 8월이란 올림픽이 있다는 것을 의미합니다. 호주 스포츠 해설가들은 ‘우리의’ 달성목표를 고조시키며 우리가 메달권에서 얼마나 잘하는지 보여주느라 바쁩니다. 한국에서는 강력한 중국의 반대에도 불구하고 고도의 미국 반 미사일 시스템을 배치할 의도를 가진 박근혜 대통령에게 많은 관심의 촛점이 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 리오에서 한국은 여자 양궁에서 금매달을 땀으로 성공을 자축하고 있습니다.
지난 7년간 리오 데 자네이로는 그들 앞에 놓여진 서울과 시드니가 보여준 길을 따르기 위해 준비해 왔습니다. 물론 그 같은 세계적 스포츠 페스티발을 주최하는 것은 커다란 과제임이 분명한 것이 점점 더 명료해지고 있습니다. 물론 거기에 따른 유익이 있습니다. 올림픽은 주최하는 도시에 전 세계적 관심이 집중되게 하며 보통 모든 방식으로 도시 하부구조를 발전하게 합니다. 때로는 – 아마도 자주 – 거대한 채무가 따르고 이러한 새로운 시설이 어떻게 가장 최상으로 사용될 수 있는지에 대한 상당한 논의가 있습니다. 같은 종류의 질문들이 매 4년마다 돌아옵니다!
올해 언론을 통한 관심과 우려는 평소보다 더 많이 있습니다. 지카 바이러스의 위협은 선출된 명망있는 골퍼가 리오에 가지 않는 것을 의미합니다. 한때 그 위협이 약화될 때까지 그 게임이 중지되어야 한다는 요청이 있었습니다. (올해 이 시간 ‘겨울’인 리오가 지금 모기들이 덜 덮혀 있을 지라도) 그러한 문제들은 훌륭한 공공홍보가 필요한 유일한 것들이 아닙니다. 브라질은 정치적인 풍파에 얽혀 있습니다; 과거 몇 년 동안에 리오가 그 게임에 신청했던 때 가능해 보였던 복지와 경제적 성장을 볼 수가 없습니다. 올림픽이 열리는 밤에 모든 돈이 다른 기본 서비스가 아니라 이 게임에 쏟아 부어야 하는지 의문적어 하는 사람들이 하는 데모를 피하기 위하여 성화 봉송은 새로운 루트로 정해져야 했습니다. 리오에서 온 첫 번째 소식들은 기쁜 것도 있지만 또 다른 종류의 장애물이 있는 것은 – 물론 스포츠의 약물 복용과 러시아가 참여할지에 대한 것입니다.
