with Rev. Prof. Dean Drayton – Remembering John Brown (존 브라운 목사를 추모하며)

The death of the Reverend Dr John Brown (1933-2026) brings to a close a remarkable life of Christian ministry, mission and commitment to justice – across Australia, Korea and beyond.

Two years after his ordination as a Presbyterian Minister in 1958, John with his wife Norma, left Australia to minister in Korea, continuing the long tradition of Australian missionary work in Korea. The nation was rebuilding after the devastation of the Korean War. For twelve years John first threw himself into learning the language, teaching Hebrew and Biblical Studies in the seminary of the Presbyterian Church in Korea, and working with both those in impoverished agricultural communities and especially with those struggling for the human rights of factory labourers. Industry was starting to boom but the workers paid the price. He loved Korea but never forgot what it was like for those on the factory floor or in the fields. Working alongside those at the Urban Institute he was there at the birth of Minjung theology in Korea. For the rest of his life John was alive to those who knew the underside of society, those who suffered injustice in any form.

I first met John when he was working in the Assembly of the Uniting Church in the Commission for Mission. He was already a legend amongst younger leaders. His call to the Church was embedded in his understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I remember one particular passage he kept coming back to in the New Testament

Jesus also suffered outside the city gate in order to sanctify the people by his own blood. Let us then go to him outside the gate and bear the abuse he endured. (Heb 13:12,13)

The church needs to hear this call to go the edges and join people there. It is what he did in Korea and what he continued to do on his return to Australia. His work in the Presbyterian Board of Mission and after 1977 in the mission agencies of the national Uniting Church Assembly kept this gospel to the fore. The ‘Statement To The Nation’ released on the day of the inauguration of the UCA has his fingerprints all over it. He helped form the policy for a multicultural church and was instrumental in enabling a covenant with the Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress.

It is not surprising that in 1983 John was attacked in the national journal The Bulletin – condemned as a communist. No, he was not one of the ‘radical left’- he got into ‘trouble’ with the powerful because he was a disciple of Jesus Christ. To the end, John never ceased in his thoughtful, committed, caring support for Koreans in Australia and kept being a voice for those who had no voice – anywhere. In sadness ,yet with gratefulness, we remember Norma in her loss and the prophetic work that she shared with John that not only has endured but will continue to grow in significance year by year.

존 브라운 목사(1933-2026)의 별세로 호주, 한국, 그리고 그 너머까지 뻗어나간 그의 놀라운 기독교 사역, 선교, 그리고 정의 실현을 위한 헌신적인 삶이 막을 내렸습니다.

존 목사는 1958년 장로교 목사 안수를 받은 지 2년 후, 아내 노마와 함께 한국으로 건너가 사역을 시작했습니다. 이는 한국에서 오랫동안 이어져 온 호주 선교사들의 전통이었습니다. 당시 한국은 한국전쟁의 참화에서 벗어나 재건 중이었습니다. 존 목사는 12년 동안 한국어 학습에 매진하며 한국 장로교 신학교에서 히브리어와 성경학을 가르쳤고, 가난한 농촌 지역 주민들과 특히 공장 노동자들의 인권 신장을 위해 헌신했습니다. 산업이 번창하기 시작했지만, 노동자들은 그 대가를 톡톡히 치렀습니다. 그는 한국을 사랑했지만, 공장과 들판에서 고된 노동을 하는 사람들의 고통을 결코 잊지 않았습니다. 그는 도시연구소(Urban Institute)에서 활동하며 한국 민중신학의 탄생에 중요한 역할을 했습니다. 존은 남은 생애 동안 사회의 어두운 면을 아는 사람들, 온갖 불의에 시달리는 사람들에게 관심을 기울였습니다.

제가 처음 존을 만난 것은 그가 연합교회 선교위원회에서 일할 때였습니다. 그는 이미 젊은 지도자들 사이에서 전설적인 인물이었습니다. 그의 소명은 예수 그리스도의 복음에 대한 깊은 이해에 뿌리를 두고 있었습니다. 저는 그가 신약성경의 한 구절을 반복해서 인용했던 것을 기억합니다.

“예수께서도 자기 피로 백성을 거룩하게 하시려고 성문 밖에서 고난을 받으셨습니다. 그러므로 우리도 성문 밖으로 나가서 그분이 당하신 고난을 함께 받읍시다.” (히브리서 13:12-13)

교회는 이처럼 사회의 변두리로 나아가 사람들과 함께하라는 부르심에 귀 기울여야 합니다. 존은 한국에서 그렇게 했고, 호주로 돌아온 후에도 계속해서 그렇게 했습니다. 장로교 선교위원회에서, 그리고 1977년 이후에는 연합교회 전국 총회 산하 선교 기관에서 일하면서 그는 이 복음을 최우선으로 삼았습니다. UCA 창립 당일에 발표된 ‘국민 성명’에는 그의 영향력이 뚜렷하게 드러납니다. 그는 다문화 교회를 위한 정책 수립에 기여했고, 원주민 및 섬 주민 기독교 연맹(Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress)과의 협약 체결에 중요한 역할을 했습니다.

1983년 존이 전국지인 <더 불레틴>에서 공산주의자로 매도당하며 공격받은 것은 놀라운 일이 아닙니다. 그는 ‘급진 좌파’가 아니었습니다. 예수 그리스도의 제자였기에 권력자들과 마찰을 빚었던 것입니다. 존은 마지막까지 호주에 거주하는 한국인들을 향한 사려 깊고 헌신적인 사랑을 멈추지 않았으며, 어디에서도 목소리를 낼 수 없는 사람들을 위해 목소리를 냈습니다. 슬픔 속에서도 감사하는 마음으로, 우리는 노마의 죽음을 애도하며, 그녀와 존이 함께 나눴던 예언자적 사역을 기억합니다. 그 사역은 지속될 뿐만 아니라 해마다 더욱 큰 의미를 지닐 것입니다.
