Summer 2026
It is now mid-summer 2026. Christmas is over. The decorations have been taken down. The New Year has arrived with the usual fireworks. What has been happening personally, socially and internationally as we move into another year, the second quarter of the 21st century?
On a personal note, Christmas meant visiting family and enjoying seeing people we know well. Our eldest grandson announced his engagement. Family will extend to another generation in the future. I visited three homes of people in their 80s. All are in their own home but two of them need walkers and get people to come to help. They lost their partners some years ago. The other couple are my eldest brother and his wife. They are doing fine but showing signs of aging. We had good conversations but it made me realise what getting older involves. I am conscious of having aged over the past year even though I keep fit and healthy. I do not do new year’s resolutions but in my prayers have come to want to be more grateful, gracious and generous in how I live. At times I need to slow down, stay calm, be patient and take one step at a time. When unexpected things happen, it is all too easy to react, to rush and make mistakes as a result.
In Sydney the dominant news has been regarding the shooting of Jewish people at Bondi Beach. It was a terrible act of violence. At first there was coverage of the actual shooting and of the person who courageously tried to stop one shooter. Then there have been the memorials and funerals. Then calls for a Royal Commission which the federal government finally decided to have. While I recognise that this shooting was horrific and am against anti-Semitism and all forms of racial and religious hatred, nevertheless I felt the attention given was excessive. I wondered how aboriginal people felt when they have had so many shootings of their people in the past, most of which were ignored by officials and the general population and accepted as part of white people taking over aboriginal land.
In Adelaide, the decision to axe scheduled speaker and author Randa Abdel-Fattah from this year’s writers’ festival program prompted an avalanche of withdrawals, with other authors pulling out in protest. It was a political decision because she is a Palestinian Australian critical of Israel. Finally, the director resigned and the event cancelled for this year. Randa Abdel-Fattah is an Australian researcher, novelist and lawyer who holds a doctorate in sociology and an academic position at Sydney’s Macquarie University. She is understandably strongly opposed to what Israel has been doing to Palestinians. But this was a writer’s event and she is a writer and should never have been axed. She was scheduled to talk about her new novel, Discipline.
Across Australia already this year we have had devastating fires in Victoria especially and huge floods in Queensland. While this is part of the way the climate works in Australia, it has been exacerbated by the reality of climate change. While we need to find ways to adapt better to more extreme weather events, we are also not doing enough to move away from fossil fuels which are the primary cause of climate change. If we continue to be slow in acting, extreme weather events will only increase in number and severity. Australia is a contributor to climate change especially with its coal and gas mining and exports. Our government puts profits ahead of responsibility.
Internationally we continue to have Donald Trump dominating the news with his extreme statements, ideas and actions. His action to have his military capture the President of Venezuela from his home and take him to the USA was daring. The goal was to gain control of Venezuela’s oil. He has also threatened Cuba and Columbia. Protests in Iran have at the time of writing claimed over 2.500 lives. Trump says help is on the way. It remains to be seen what he will do in Iran. He continues to want to take over Greenland perhaps even by military action. He wants their mineral resources.
The war in Ukraine continues with Russia sending missiles and showing no sign of wanting the war to end until Putin gets the land and other demands he wants. In Gaza, Netanyahu continues to restrict aid to desperate Palestinians facing winter without adequate shelter. The civil war in Sudan does not get much attention but the loss of life there is greater than the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. The prospects for real peace in each of these places continues to be frustrated. Meanwhile ordinary people suffer while the military go on with their murderous and destructive activities.
The world needs better leaders. At present autocratic leaders are getting away with what they can do. The United Nations should be given the authority and resources it requires. Unfortunately, nationalism gets in the way and nationalistic leaders like Trump have ignored international law, withdrawn US financial support and made it harder for the United Nations to carry out its important work.
We move into 2026 without a great deal of hope it seems. However, there is always hope. Leaders do not last. People who want peace and justice are on the right track. As a Christian my hope is not in political leaders who are always less impressive than one would like, even the better ones. My hope is in God. The person I follow is Jesus Christ who knew what political figures were capable of and was crucified as a result of Jewish and Roman leaders calling for his death. The resurrection of Jesus confounds the rule of violence and death. It gives hope to those who trust in Jesus even if it has to be for life beyond this life. Nevertheless, Christians regularly pray that God’s reign of justice, compassion and peace will come on earth as in heaven. This is my prayer.

2026년 여름
2026년 한여름입니다. 크리스마스는 끝났고, 장식도 모두 치웠습니다. 새해는 늘 그렇듯 불꽃놀이와 함께 찾아왔습니다. 21세기의 두 번째 분기, 새로운 한 해를 맞이하며 우리 각자에게는, 사회적으로는, 그리고 국제적으로는 어떤 일들이 있었을까요?
개인적으로는 크리스마스에 가족들을 방문하고 잘 아는 사람들을 만나며 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다. 큰 손자가 약혼 소식을 전했고, 앞으로 가족은 또 한 세대를 이어갈 것입니다. 80대 어르신 세 분 댁을 방문했습니다. 세 분 모두 자택에 계시지만, 두 분은 보행기를 사용하시고 다른 사람의 도움을 받으셔야 했습니다. 몇 년 전 배우자를 여의셨기 때문입니다. 다른 한 분은 제 큰형 부부였습니다. 두 분 모두 건강하시지만, 세월의 흔적이 역력했습니다. 좋은 대화를 나누면서 나이 드는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 새삼 깨달았습니다. 건강을 잘 챙기고 있지만, 지난 한 해 동안 나이를 먹었다는 것을 의식하게 되었습니다. 저는 새해 결심을 하지는 않지만, 기도를 통해 더욱 감사하고, 너그럽고, 관대한 삶을 살고 싶다는 소망을 품게 되었습니다. 때로는 속도를 늦추고, 침착함을 유지하고, 인내심을 갖고 한 걸음씩 나아가야 합니다. 예상치 못한 일이 생기면 너무 쉽게 반응하고, 서두르다가 실수를 저지르기 쉽습니다.
시드니에서는 본다이 비치에서 발생한 유대인 총격 사건이 주요 뉴스였습니다. 끔찍한 폭력 행위였습니다. 처음에는 총격 사건 자체와 용감하게 총격범을 막으려 했던 사람에 대한 보도가 있었습니다. 그 후 추모식과 장례식이 이어졌습니다. 그리고 마침내 연방 정부가 구성하기로 결정한 진상조사위원회를 요구하는 목소리가 높아졌습니다. 저는 이 총격 사건이 끔찍했고 반유대주의와 모든 형태의 인종적, 종교적 증오에 반대한다는 것을 인정하지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 과도한 관심이 쏟아졌다고 생각합니다. 과거에 수많은 동족 총격 사건을 겪었던 원주민들은 어떤 심정일까요? 대부분의 사건은 공무원과 일반 대중에게 묵살되었고, 백인들이 원주민 땅을 점령하는 과정의 일부로 받아들여졌습니다.
애들레이드 작가 축제에서 예정됐던 연사이자 작가인 란다 압델-파타가 프로그램에서 제외되자, 다른 작가들도 항의의 뜻으로 불참을 선언하며 잇따른 불참 사태가 발생했습니다. 이는 그녀가 이스라엘을 비판하는 팔레스타인계 호주인이라는 정치적 이유에서 비롯된 결정이었습니다. 결국 축제 운영 책임자는 사임했고, 올해 축제는 취소되었습니다. 란다 압델-파타는 호주 출신의 연구자, 소설가, 변호사로 사회학 박사 학위를 소지하고 있으며 시드니 맥쿼리 대학교에서 교수로 재직 중입니다. 그녀가 이스라엘의 팔레스타인 탄압에 강력히 반대하는 것은 당연한 일입니다. 하지만 이 축제는 작가들을 위한 행사였고, 그녀는 작가로서 결코 프로그램에서 제외되어서는 안 됐습니다. 그녀는 신작 소설 『규율(Discipline)』에 대해 이야기할 예정이었습니다.
올해 호주에서는 특히 빅토리아 주에서 파괴적인 산불이 발생했고, 퀸즐랜드 주에서는 대규모 홍수가 일어났습니다. 이는 호주 기후의 자연스러운 현상이지만, 기후 변화라는 현실로 인해 더욱 악화되고 있습니다. 우리는 더욱 극심해지는 기상 현상에 더 잘 적응할 방법을 찾아야 하지만, 기후 변화의 주요 원인인 화석 연료에서 벗어나기 위한 노력은 충분하지 않습니다. 우리가 지금처럼 행동이 느리다면, 극심한 기상 현상은 더욱 빈번해지고 강도도 심해질 것입니다. 호주는 특히 석탄과 가스 채굴 및 수출로 인해 기후 변화에 크게 기여하고 있습니다. 우리 정부는 책임보다 이익을 우선시하고 있습니다.
국제적으로는 도널드 트럼프가 극단적인 발언, 생각, 행동으로 뉴스를 장악하고 있습니다. 베네수엘라 대통령을 자택에서 군대를 동원해 체포해 미국으로 데려온 그의 행동은 대담했습니다. 그의 목표는 베네수엘라의 석유 자원을 장악하는 것이었습니다. 그는 쿠바와 콜롬비아도 위협했습니다. 이란에서는 현재까지 시위로 2,500명 이상이 사망했습니다. 트럼프는 지원이 곧 도착할 것이라고 말했습니다. 그가 이란에 대해 어떤 조치를 취할지는 두고 봐야 합니다. 그는 군사 행동을 통해서라도 그린란드를 점령하려는 의도를 계속해서 보이고 있습니다. 그는 그린란드의 광물 자원을 탐내고 있습니다.
우크라이나 전쟁은 러시아가 미사일을 발사하며 계속되고 있으며, 푸틴이 원하는 영토와 기타 요구 조건을 얻을 때까지 전쟁을 끝낼 기미를 보이지 않고 있습니다. 가자지구에서는 네타냐후 총리가 적절한 거처도 없이 겨울을 나야 하는 절박한 팔레스타인 주민들에 대한 지원을 제한하고 있습니다. 수단 내전은 큰 주목을 받지 못하고 있지만, 그곳에서의 인명 피해는 우크라이나와 가자지구 전쟁보다 더 큽니다. 이 모든 지역에서 진정한 평화를 이룰 전망은 계속해서 좌절되고 있습니다. 그동안 일반 시민들은 고통받고 있으며, 군대는 살인과 파괴 행위를 자행하고 있습니다.
세상은 더 나은 지도자를 필요로 합니다. 현재 독재 지도자들은 마음대로 행동하고 있습니다. 유엔은 필요한 권한과 자원을 부여받아야 합니다. 불행히도 민족주의가 걸림돌이 되고 있으며, 트럼프와 같은 민족주의 지도자들은 국제법을 무시하고 미국의 재정 지원을 철회했으며 유엔의 중요한 활동 수행을 더욱 어렵게 만들었습니다.
2026년을 맞이하는 지금, 큰 희망이 없어 보입니다. 하지만 희망은 언제나 있습니다. 지도자는 영원하지 않습니다. 평화와 정의를 원하는 사람들이 올바른 길을 가고 있습니다. 그리스도인으로서 저는 정치 지도자들에게 희망을 두지 않습니다. 정치 지도자들은 아무리 훌륭한 지도자라 할지라도 항상 기대에 미치지 못하는 경우가 많기 때문입니다. 제 희망은 하나님께 있습니다. 제가 따르는 분은 예수 그리스도이십니다. 예수님은 정치인들의 만행을 알고 계셨고, 유대인과 로마 지도자들의 사형 요구로 십자가에 못 박히셨습니다. 예수님의 부활은 폭력과 죽음의 지배를 무너뜨렸습니다. 부활은 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 비록 이 세상 너머의 삶을 위한 것이라 할지라도 희망을 줍니다. 그리스도인들은 하나님의 정의와 자비와 평화의 통치가 하늘에서와 같이 땅에서도 이루어지기를 끊임없이 기도합니다. 이것이 제 기도입니다.
