AN AD ON THE BACK OF A BUS
It was a gym advertisement. EXERCISE OFTEN – LOOK AFTER YOUR BODY– IT IS THE ONLY TEMPLE YOU HAVE. Sitting in the car waiting for the bus to move, I vaguely remembered these words. It was a biblical passage. I later looked it up. It is 1 Cor 6:19.
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you.
I am sure that the marketing people felt good about modifying this saying that is embedded in our cultural memory. The bit ‘your body is a temple’ was the bit that worked for them. The rest -‘the Holy Spirit within you’ -they were able to dispense with.
This passage is set within a much wider framework in a letter written by Paul to believers in Corinth. Three chapters earlier he writes these words “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you” The word ‘you’ here is plural. Paul is reminding them that God’s spirit dwells within the community. In fact this is one of three descriptions of the church in the letter. First he says the believers are the people “whom God has called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ the Lord.” Second “do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you”. And later the third statement: “you are the body of Christ”. Paul underlines the fact that the church is a community of believers with whom God dwells.
In the passage which attracted the ad writers, Paul is writing about a problem. A person within the group has betrayed who they are.
Paul is reminding the congregation we are never just individuals before God. It is not a God-Me matter. Don’t forget, he underlines, the Holy Spirit is within the congregation and the individuals in the congregation, holding them together as one body, the divine glue for the community making the people the Body of Christ, the place where God dwells.
How puzzling that is for most of us in a time when the congregation is rarely seen as the vital base for life. Mostly we live for ourselves and our families, and build our homes as our temple, our base. To Paul we are never just individuals. We are members, one of another, we are members of Christ’s body, responding to God’s call. We are never only individuals as the advertisement implies. We are called to be members of the community of faith, for that is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
If I ever got the chance I would be tempted to add a few words in brackets to the ad on the back of the bus.

버스 뒷면에 붙어 있던 광고
헬스장 광고였습니다. “자주 운동하세요 – 당신의 몸을 돌보세요 – 당신의 몸은 유일한 성전입니다.” 버스가 출발하기를 기다리며 차 안에 앉아 있는데, 문득 이 문구가 떠올랐습니다. 성경 구절이었던 것 같습니다. 나중에 찾아보니 고린도전서 6장 19절이었습니다.
“너희 몸은 성령이 거하시는 전인 줄 알지 못하느냐?”
마케팅 담당자들은 우리 문화 속에 깊이 자리 잡은 이 문구를 바꿔서 꽤 만족스러워했을 겁니다. “너희 몸은 성전이다”라는 부분은 효과적이었을 테고, “너희 안에 계신 성령”이라는 부분은 빼도 괜찮았을 겁니다.
이 구절은 바울이 고린도 교인들에게 보낸 편지 전체 맥락 속에 있습니다. 바울은 세 장 앞부분에서 이렇게 썼습니다. “너희는 하나님의 성전이며 하나님의 영이 너희 안에 거하시는 줄 알지 못하느냐?” 여기서 ‘너희’는 복수입니다. 바울은 하나님의 영이 공동체 안에 거하신다는 사실을 상기시키고 있습니다. 사실 이것은 서신에서 교회를 묘사하는 세 가지 표현 중 하나입니다. 첫째, 그는 신자들이 “하나님께서 그의 아들 예수 그리스도 주님과 교제하도록 부르신 사람들”이라고 말합니다. 둘째, “너희는 하나님의 성전이며 하나님의 영이 너희 안에 거하시는 것을 알지 못하느냐?”라고 묻습니다. 그리고 마지막으로 “너희는 그리스도의 몸이다”라고 말합니다. 바울은 교회가 하나님이 거하시는 신자들의 공동체라는 사실을 강조합니다.

오늘날 교회 공동체가 삶의 중요한 기반으로 여겨지지 않는 시대에, 바울이 우리에게 이런 말을 하는 것은 참으로 당혹스럽습니다. 우리는 대부분 자신과 가족을 위해 살고, 가정을 우리의 성전, 우리의 기반으로 삼습니다. 그러나 바울에게 우리는 결코 단순히 개인이 아닙니다. 우리는 서로 연결된 지체이며, 그리스도의 몸의 지체로서 하나님의 부르심에 응답하는 사람들입니다. 광고에서 암시하는 것처럼 우리는 결코 단순히 개인이 아닙니다. 우리는 믿음의 공동체의 지체로 부르심을 받았으며, 그 공동체가 바로 성령의 전이기 때문입니다.
만약 기회가 된다면 버스 뒷면에 있는 광고에 괄호 안에 몇 마디를 덧붙이고 싶습니다.
자주 가십시오 – (그리스도의) 몸을 돌보십시오 – 그것이 바로 당신이 가진 유일한 (성령의) 전입니다.
