The Trap of Goodness
Beware of those who claim to be good, especially the religious. But aren’t we all supposed be good? In fact every culture and nation have their own view on what is to be good.
What is the biblical perspective on goodness? It is a big book and you might be surprised by what is there. A shorthand summary -Jesus said no one is good but God! Goodness is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. This seems at odds with what most believe. Is not being a moral person the way to be good?
Paul addresses this question directly in Romans chapter 7 in the New Testament. It is not a well-known passage. In it he shows he can never the do the good he seeks to do. For him goodness is a trap, because morality, the law has been subverted by my own view and by sin.
The Old Testament account in Genesis chapter 3 makes a similar point. In this origin story Adam and Eve are told not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or they will die. They do so. Only then do they discover they will be cut off from being able to eat from the tree of life. What is so compelling about the story is that Eve’s view of what she was doing was not a direct repudiation of the good. She was tempted to take her view of what she could see, and neglect God’s instruction. She saw the tree was good for food, was a delight to the eyes, and was desired to make one wise. She wanted what she thought was good. It turned out a nightmare.
Like her, when we take our view of what is good we find out the unintended outcomes sooner or later. The world curves in upon ourself and our view. Our definitions of the good divide others into the good and the bad, the wise and the foolish, the pretty and the ugly, our friends and our enemies, the clever and the dumb. We create a divided world and let loose terrible forces. And we then find we cannot even keep our own view of what is good. The bad is awful enough, but our good turns out to be beyond us. We are trapped in a world of our own making and miss what is the goodness of God.
What a terrifying realisation it is when we find that the outcome of our best thoughts and actions end up distorted and morally twisted. What a shock to find that our view of goodness ends up betraying the good we have attempted to live.
But there is a way through. Christ came and lived by the goodness of God not the goodness of the morality of the nation. In the eyes of those who defined the good in his time he was rejected as evil!
He suffered the cost of these restricted views of goodness. His cross became for us the tree of life, and opened another way of living. The risen Lord freed us from the consequences of our goodness and gave us a different way. Don’t be trapped by what you think is good, but set you mind on the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Live in step with the Spirit and make the amazing discovery that you are guided by the Spirit. In this way we find the reality of God’s goodness. Not through our achievement, but through walking in God’s presence. As the risen Lord declared, “I am with you always to the end of the age.” (Matt 28:20b)

선함의 함정
선하다고 주장하는 사람들, 특히 종교인들을 조심하십시오. 하지만 우리 모두는 선해야 하지 않을까요? 사실 모든 문화와 국가에는 선에 대한 저마다의 관점이 있습니다.
성경은 선에 대해 어떤 관점을 제시할까요? 성경은 방대한 책이며, 그 안에 담긴 내용에 놀랄 수도 있습니다. 간단히 요약하자면, 예수님은 하나님 외에는 아무도 선하지 않다고 말씀하셨습니다! 선함은 성령의 열매입니다. 이는 대부분의 사람들이 믿는 바와 상반되는 것처럼 보입니다. 도덕적이지 않은 사람이 되는 것이 선한 길일까요?
사도 바울은 신약성경 로마서 7장에서 이 질문에 직접적으로 답합니다. 잘 알려지지 않은 구절이지만, 그는 자신이 추구하는 선을 결코 행할 수 없다고 말합니다. 그에게 선함은 함정입니다. 왜냐하면 도덕과 율법은 자신의 관점과 죄로 인해 무너졌기 때문입니다.
구약성경 창세기 3장에서도 비슷한 맥락을 볼 수 있습니다. 이 창조 이야기에서 아담과 하와는 선악을 알게 하는 나무의 열매를 먹지 말라는 경고를 받습니다. 만약 먹으면 죽게 될 것이기 때문입니다. 그들은 그렇게 했습니다. 그러고 나서야 생명나무 열매를 먹을 수 없게 될 것임을 깨달았습니다. 이 이야기가 그토록 감동적인 이유는 이브가 한 행동이 선을 직접적으로 부정한 것이 아니었기 때문입니다. 그녀는 눈에 보이는 것만을 따라 하나님의 가르침을 무시하고 싶은 유혹에 빠졌습니다. 그녀는 그 나무가 먹기에 좋고, 보기에 아름다우며, 지혜롭게 해 줄 것이라고 생각했습니다. 그녀는 자신이 좋다고 생각하는 것을 원했습니다. 하지만 결과는 악몽이었습니다.
이브처럼 우리도 선에 대한 자신의 관점을 고수할 때, 결국에는 의도치 않은 결과를 마주하게 됩니다. 세상은 우리 자신과 우리의 관점에 갇혀버립니다. 우리가 정의하는 선은 다른 사람들을 선과 악, 지혜로운 자와 어리석은 자, 아름다운 자와 추한 자, 친구와 적, 영리한 자와 어리석은 자로 나눕니다. 우리는 분열된 세상을 만들고 끔찍한 힘을 풀어놓습니다. 그리고 결국에는 우리 자신의 선에 대한 관점조차 지키지 못하게 됩니다. 악은 이미 충분히 끔찍하지만, 우리가 생각하는 선은 우리 손이 닿지 않는 곳에 있는 것처럼 느껴집니다. 우리는 스스로 만든 세상에 갇혀 하나님의 선하심을 놓치고 있습니다.
우리의 가장 선한 생각과 행동의 결과가 왜곡되고 도덕적으로 비뚤어지는 것을 깨달을 때 얼마나 두려운 일입니까? 우리가 생각하는 선함이 우리가 살려고 애썼던 선을 배신하는 결과를 낳는다는 사실에 얼마나 큰 충격을 받습니까?
하지만 해결책은 있습니다. 그리스도는 세상의 도덕적 기준이 아닌 하나님의 선하심으로 사셨습니다. 당시 사람들의 눈에는 선의 기준이 악으로 여겨져 거부당했습니다!
그는 이러한 편협한 선의 기준에 대한 대가를 치르셨습니다. 그의 십자가는 우리에게 생명나무가 되었고, 새로운 삶의 길을 열어주었습니다. 부활하신 주님은 우리의 선함이 가져온 결과에서 우리를 해방시키시고 다른 길을 주셨습니다. 자신이 생각하는 선함에 갇히지 말고 예수 그리스도의 영에 마음을 두십시오. 성령과 발맞춰 살아가며 성령의 인도하심을 받는다는 놀라운 사실을 발견하십시오. 이렇게 함으로써 우리는 하나님의 선하심의 실체를 발견할 수 있습니다. 우리의 성취를 통해서가 아니라, 하나님의 임재 안에서 걸어갈 때 비로소 구원을 얻을 수 있습니다. 부활하신 주님께서 선언하셨듯이, “내가 세상 끝까지 너희와 함께 있겠다.” (마태복음 28:20b)
